  • The Publishing Department will explore the topic, draft recommendations and report back to the committee regarding the use of AI in literature story submissions. 
  • AA Grapevine Board Chair: Exploring the potential use of artificial intelligence to improve circulation forecasting, subscription renewal modeling, user experience, and website optimization. To support this work, the Board established an AI Companion Ad Hoc Committee and an Events and Merchandise Ad Hoc Committee.
  • Trustees Literature Committee: Discuss revising the standard language used in calls for stories to explicitly note that stories generated using AI will not be considered: The committee discussed updating the standard language for calls for stories with language related to artificial intelligence (large language learning models).

General Service Office Updates

  • Staff is developing a Frequently Asked Questions document in response to member inquiries regarding the Fifth Edition, such as information about past changes to the 1-164p, what process was involved, and more information about the conference committee process.
  • CPC series “Meet A.A.’s Nonalcoholic Trustees” to launch with four initial videos on YouTube.
  • Enhancement to Fellowship Connection and other reporting tools are being explored to better capture registered group data.

Publishing Updates

  • An audio book of the Plain Language Big Book has launched, available for $9.99. Find out more here. https://onlineliterature.aa.org/audiobooks 
  • Fifth Edition of the Big Book is anticipated to be available in early February 2027. Additional communications are forthcoming.
    • Cost will be $20 
    • Returning to a jacketed hardcover edition based on fellowship feedback
  • Gross literature sales were 15% less than YTD budget and 2% less than the comparable period last year, primarily due to a decline in sales of the Plain Language Big Book (PLBB) as it transitions from its introductory sales rate to ongoing sales rate. Along with postponing large orders until the Fifth Edition becomes available. 

AAWS/General Service Board Summary (YTD June 30, 2026)

    • Total operating revenue is $10,329,213, slightly more than budgeted of $10,318,128. 
    • Total operating expenses before depreciation $9,561,563, which is about 5% less than the YTD budget of $10,043,499
  • Operating surplus before depreciation is $767,650 compared to a YTD budgeted surplus of $274,629
  • Contributions are $4.6M which is 4% more than budgeted and 8% more than this time in 2025.
  • The Reserve Fund is at 4.97 months of 2026 budgeted GSO, GV and LV operating expenses. Once the entire amount authorized to be drawn for the retrofit is drawn, the Reserve Fund is expected to be at about 4.79 months of operating expenses YE 2026.
  • The QFRs for the 1st and 2nd Quarters are based on the Original Budget. The QFRs for the 3rd quarter and full year are based on the Reforecast Budget.

    • There are short videos explaining the purpose of a Regional Forum available! https://www.aa.org/regional-local-and-special-forums 
    • It is held once a rotation in the Pacific Region. The next Pacific Regional Forum will be on December 4 – 6, 2026 in San Diego, California. 
      • Translation is no longer provided by GSO. The Regional Forums committee will be surveying the regional trustees to assess current and future interpretation needs and the availability of resources to meet those needs.
      • AI interpretation is being used at some Regional Forum events taking into account technical barriers to accessing the tool, and its ability to communicate AA and General Service recovery effectively.
  • Area 08 passed a motion to fund live interpretation resources at their expense for ASL. They are asking for support from other Pacific Region Areas to help cover costs for Spanish interpretation.

Recently, I’ve had the privilege of watching the Panel 77 delegate elections in other areas. I am incredibly grateful for hybrid events, which allow us to observe how different areas operate and see the election results firsthand. I look forward to the opportunity to serve alongside these amazing Panel 77 delegates!

On a personal note, I am traveling in North Dakota for my high school reunion and my niece’s wedding. It is wonderful reconnecting with family, old friends, and mentors.

Currently, I am busy preparing for the upcoming Pacific Regional Forum, where I will be co-presenting with a fellow delegate from Area 6 on the timely topic of “AI and AA Traditions.”

Speaking of the Pacific Regional Forum – the next one will take place December 4–6, 2026, in San Diego, California. If you aren’t sure what a Regional Forum is, there are short explainer videos available at aa.org/regional-local-and-special-forums.

GSO no longer provides live interpretation services for the Forum. While AI interpretation is being tested at some events (taking into account technical barriers and the nuances of AA recovery), Area 08 (San Diego) recently passed a motion to fund live ASL interpretation at their own expense. They are currently asking for support from other Pacific Region Areas to help cover the costs of Spanish interpretation.

The Carry the Message Contribution Challenge is an opportunity to strengthen the connection between our groups, our districts, and our Area by sharing information about Area service and the many ways groups and members can participate.

Through our trusted servants, committees, and service structure, our Area provides services that support our common purpose of carrying A.A.’s message. This effort is designed to help more groups understand those services, how they are connected to them, and how they can participate if they choose.

How Can You Participate?

This effort will work through our existing service structure, with districts leading the way in connecting with the groups they serve.

We encourage members to:

  •     Connect with your District and DCM to learn how your district is participating.
  •     Help share information about Area service with groups in your community.
  •     Encourage participation in the many forms it can take, including trusted service, Area involvement, and supporting Area services through our groups’ Seventh Tradition contributions.

Each District and DCM will have access to resources to support this effort. All materials are available electronically, with ongoing support from the Finance Committee.

]]> Financial Reflections: Panel 76 Conference Report https://area92aa.org/financial-reflections-panel-76-conference-report/ Sat, 05 Sep 2026 02:58:40 +0000 https://area92aa.org/?p=94123 The Panel 76 Full Conference Report reveals tight financial realities for both the General Service Office (GSO) and Grapevine. While I am not suggesting groups alter their 7th Tradition percentages – finances are stretched at all levels – I do invite you to reflect on two important questions: When we need to save money, do we reduce expenses at the general service level or the 12th Step level? And are we actually saving money, or merely shifting the burden to different service levels?

Two recent decisions highlight this shift:

  • Report Printing: GSO initially decided not to print the full conference report, saving their budget $80,000. A floor motion passed to print it for sale instead, meaning the financial cost is now absorbed directly by the fellowship.
  • Regional Forums: To cut costs, GSO replaced live verbal interpretation with an automated software called Wordly. In response, Area 08 (this year’s host) plans to provide live interpretation for around $3,000. The Pacific Region Delegates are currently coordinating contributions to cover this expense. One of the vital keys to keeping Alcoholics Anonymous member-driven is an informed group conscience. It is up to us to make sure those consciences are actively influencing the General Service Office (GSO), AA World Services (AAWS), and the General Service Conference coming up at the end of April.
